Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is Hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing is an antenatal class that helps expectant Mums and Dads to be more relaxed and feel more in control of labour and the birthing process. Hypnobirthing teaches methods that encourage a natural birth. Most importantly, it takes away the fear and anxiety felt by Mums as they go into labour and puts them back in control of the birthing process.
Q. Who is Hypnobirthing suitable for?
Everyone. Hypnobirthing can help all expectant mothers, be it their first birth or subsequent births. Many first time mothers can be anxious as they have never done it before and fear the unknown. Meanwhile, many mothers who have given birth before want to feel more in control of the process and make their next birth a positive experience. Hypnobirthing will, without a doubt, make the experience a better one for any mother.
Q.So am I under hypnosis?
The word ‘Hypno’ makes the whole thing sound very mysterious and slightly strange. In fact, as with almost all hypnosis, Hypnobirthing is a method of self hypnosis. This is an almost trance-like state achieved through being very relaxed, aware of your surroundings, safe and completely in control. It allows you to tune out distractions, which is ideal during labour as it lets the body get on with doing what it is designed to do without anything getting in the way.
Q. Is Hypnosis safe?
Yes, hypnosis is absolutely safe. In fact, we all go into a similar state of self-hypnosis to that of hypnobirthing at least once a day - just before drifting off to sleep. Unfortunately, TV, film and stage portrayal of hypnosis, which is exaggerated for entertainment purposes, has left a lot of people with a distorted view of how it works. The self hypnosis taught during hypnobirthing classes leaves you in control of your own mind at all times and is completely safe.
Does Hypnobirthing really work?
Yes, no one can promise a perfect birth or predict what will happen during labour but hypnobirthing can make all the difference not only to your experience of birth but also the whole process of birth.
70% of Hypnobirths are completely unmedicated and caesarean rates are less than half the average. Hypnobirths are typically very quiet, calm and peaceful with birthing women and their birthing partners feeling confident and in control, needing just minimal input from midwives and often being very self contained as a couple.
Q. When is the best time to do the course?
You can do the Hypnobirthing course any time during your pregnancy. I have had mothers who have started the course very late in their pregnancies and it has worked very well. However, in my opinion the best time is around the end of your second trimester, or between 25-28 weeks. This gives ample time to practice everything learnt during the classes at home so the techniques become second nature to you by the time you go into labour.
Q. Do fathers come too?
Most fathers attend the course (usually arriving with enormous scepticism and leaving with huge enthusiasm). It's lovely if a father does the course because then he's in a position to give the mother the best possible support. It also makes a difference to their relationship, knowing that they've achieved this together. It makes a difference to his relationship with the baby too, knowing that he was a useful and positive part of how his child entered the world.
Of course sometimes the father can't come and the mother will do the course on her own and that works perfectly well too.
Q. Does the fee cover both of us?
Yes, the fee covers both of you.
Q. What else does the fee cover?
Included with the course are The Hypnobirthing Book, the course CD and practical handouts booklet. After you've completed the course, I will be available for telephone or email support without charge. I want to support you in every way possible to have a natural and gentle birth.
Q. Should I wear anything in particular?
Just comfortable clothes so you can relax. We will be doing gentle visualisations and relaxations rather than any physical exercises. If you have a birthing ball, I recommend having it blown up and ready to use as it can be a comfortable alternative to a chair especially in later pregnancy.
Q. How do I contact you for further information?
If you have a question that hasn't been answered here, would like more information or you would like to book a course you can email me any time at Info@HypnobirthUK.com or you can call me directly on 07824333221.
